“Great short stories”

Intrigues Among Us by Arizona author G.A. Ivins puts the reader in a front row seat for the birth of mayhem.  This intimate book of sixteen short stories traces backstories of crime.  A confluence of factors, some seemingly benign, adds up to calamity in each of the narratives.  Several stories come off as representative of the collection.  In “Arrangement 86,” a psychiatrist thinks he has figured out the patterns of life only to be destroyed by his own murder plot.  In another, an abused wife turns the tables on her husband.  A third story features a woman who dreams of an adventurous life but finds a bittersweet answer to replace her repressed fantasies.  In a final narrative, two secret agents gain insights that go beyond their death-defying assignments.

Intrigues Among Us sets the stage for the criminal investigations that are sure to follow.  Social dynamics of different situations are explored.  The stories allow the reader a glimpse at the convergence of factors in the birth of corruption and evil.  As a result, the narratives come off as strangely uplifting, unveiling the hidden truths that can only be defined as Intrigues.
