I developed my interest in writing during high school. The teachers encouraged students’ insights in literature. Their passion for storytelling influenced me. During this time, I became a fan of literature by reading many authors like Steinbeck and Faulkner. I always got the impression the teachers were in my corner. They seemed to say, “I’m pulling for you,” or “Keep up the good work.”
So, I decided to give the profession a try. That experiment lasted thirty-eight years. I collected quite a few amusing stories from that period, especially from my stint of teaching at the Arizona State Prison.
Now, I amuse myself by playing tennis and by writing. Anyway, some of my stories have appeared in little magazines like Mystery Time and Calliope (the official publication of the Writers’ Special Interest Group of American Mensa, Ltd. Contrary to public opinion, I’ve found members of this organization to be rather pleasant and unpretentious.)
In regard to tennis: I’ve been a ranked in the Southwest Section of the USTA several times in the past decade. I don’t really see myself playing in national tournaments. Let’s be realistic! I’m just as happy not getting beaten to a pulp by some of these high ranking oldsters. On my off days, I tend my vegetable garden. In addition, I recently took up sketching and painting. Some of the paintings serve as book cover art so that gives me a lift.
One article stressed some other events in my life: “Among his other achievements, Ivins once cranked down the jammed landing gear of a light airplane during an almost ill-fated flight.” “Ivins is proud of his kinship with members of the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Arizona.” Yes. True. It’s been an interesting life.
